Option #1: Free/Subsidized
Price: $0-10 per hourThere are various options to receive in-home support that are either free or low-cost. These options include volunteering, grants, programs offered by the VA, In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), and support from government and non-profit organizations. However, these options have restrictions and strict eligibility criteria and may only be available in certain regions. Our staff can assist with getting more information on these programs and the process of applying to help reduce the cost of in-home care.
-
Option #2: Direct Hire (Independent)
Price: $15.50+ per hourHiring, managing, and paying a caregiver directly is the most cost-effective way of paying for in-home care. However, it comes with the responsibilities of being an employer, including paying the caregiver, employment taxes, overtime, conducting background checks, drug testing, and handling no-shows or cancellations. Additionally, you will be liable in case the caregiver gets hurt or injured in your home. Our staff can provide resources to help find independent caregivers and provide information on how to manage the responsibilities of being an employer safely.
-
Option #3: Home Care Agency
Price: $35-45 per hourThe safest and most convenient option for hiring caregivers is through a licensed and bonded home care agency, but this option is also the most expensive. The caregivers are employed by the agency and have benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and workers’ compensation coverage. The agency is also responsible for managing all payments to the caregiver and provides backup caregivers in case of absences. This option is ideal for those who have long-term care insurance, substantial savings, or assets to cover the cost of in-home care.
-
Option #4: Veteran Aide & Attendance
Free (for Military Veterans and their spouses who meet eligibility criteria only)The Department of Veteran Affairs offers a special benefit to war era veterans and their surviving spouses called Aid and Attendance.
This is a tax-free benefit based on certain eligibility criteria, offered to provide financial assistance to help cover the cost of in-home care or in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home. If you are a Veteran or a spouse of a Veteran, contact us for more information.
